An air filter has no warning light, no wear indicator and no symptom you would notice from the seat. Left to a calendar it gets forgotten, because nothing ever reminds you. The practical answer is to attach the check to something you already do without being reminded, and the oil change is the obvious candidate. Do the two together and the PM155S in a Super Duke R will never be older than one service interval.

Pairing the two jobs
Both need the bike still, both need ten minutes, and neither has to wait for the other to finish. Drain the oil, and while it drains take out the element, blow it through from the clean face and hold it up to the light. If it wants a wash it can have one while the bike waits for its fresh oil. By the time the sump plug goes back in, the induction side has been dealt with for another interval and nothing has been added to the day.
What a habit is worth on this engine
The 1290 twin is used, on this model, mostly in short hard bursts on public roads. Its owner is far more likely to track oil changes than filter condition, and there is no shame in that — one has an interval printed in the book and the other does not. Attaching the second to the first is simply the cheapest form of discipline. What it buys is not extra performance, since no panel in a standard airbox provides that. It buys an induction system in the same state in its tenth year as in its first.
Care and cleaning
Air from the clean face outwards, every single time the box is open. Water only when air alone stops returning the panel to condition: warm, a mild detergent, a proper rinse and then air drying alone, with no heat and no flame, and no refitting until it is dry through.
