DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 00698-29 is a shock absorber spring rated at 90 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.
Key Features
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- 113 mm of usable stroke
- Inner diameter 57 mm
- Powder-coated yellow
- Öhlins part number 00698-29
- Free length 230 mm
- Measured spring rate 90 N/mm
Manufacture and Tolerance
Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes.
The Numbers That Matter
Dimensionally this is a 57 mm × 230 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 90 N/mm.
What This Rate Does
This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
Rate and the Linkage
Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters.
Applications
A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take.
Installation
Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct. Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.
Fitting and Setup Service
We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
