DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00280-09 is a shock absorber spring rated at 9 N/mm, 200 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • 144 mm of usable stroke
  • Free length 200 mm
  • Measured spring rate 9 N/mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Öhlins part number 00280-09

How Öhlins Makes Them

Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships.

Dimensions

The 46 mm bore and 200 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 9 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Where This Rate Belongs

On a machine ridden solo and mostly on the road, softer is often the honest choice. A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it.

Applications

Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.

What Fitting Involves

Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
