DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00180-56 is a shock absorber spring rated at 85 N/mm, 200 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Measured spring rate 85 N/mm
  • 88 mm of usable stroke
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Öhlins part number 00180-56
  • Free length 200 mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships.

The Numbers That Matter

The 46 mm bore and 200 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 85 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Choosing 85 N/mm

Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

Rate and the Linkage

A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most.

Applications

Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into.

Fitting

Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
