DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21041-26 is a shock absorber spring rated at 85 N/mm, 150 mm long with a 51 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Öhlins part number 21041-26
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Measured spring rate 85 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 51 mm
  • 77 mm of usable stroke
  • Free length 150 mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later.

Size and Rate

Dimensionally this is a 51 mm × 150 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 85 N/mm.

Choosing 85 N/mm

Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most.

Applications

Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do.

Fitting

Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops. Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
