DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21115-24 is a shock absorber spring rated at 80 N/mm, 150 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Free length 150 mm
  • Öhlins part number 21115-24
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Powder-coated black
  • 80 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 80 N/mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against.

The Numbers That Matter

Dimensionally this is a 57 mm × 150 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 80 N/mm.

What This Rate Does

Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

What the Rear Spring Decides

On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect.

Applications

Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits.

Fitting

If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
