DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01091-21 is a shock absorber spring rated at 75 N/mm, 160 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Free length 160 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 80 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 75 N/mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Öhlins part number 01091-21

Manufacture and Tolerance

Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch.

The Numbers That Matter

Dimensionally this is a 57 mm × 160 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 75 N/mm.

What This Rate Does

This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

What the Rear Spring Decides

The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load.

Applications

Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into.

Fitting

Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
