DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60012-14 is a shock absorber spring rated at 64 N/mm, 250 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Measured spring rate 64 N/mm
  • Free length 250 mm
  • Öhlins part number 60012-14

Manufacture and Tolerance

Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain.

The Numbers That Matter

The 57 mm bore and 250 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 64 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

What This Rate Does

A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Rate and the Linkage

Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering.

Applications

Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do.

Fitting

Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
