DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 06320-16 is a shock absorber spring rated at 64 N/mm, 215 mm long with a 61 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.
Key Features
- 120 mm of usable stroke
- Measured spring rate 64 N/mm
- Free length 215 mm
- Öhlins part number 06320-16
- Inner diameter 61 mm
- Powder-coated yellow
- Straight-wound, constant rate
Manufacture and Tolerance
Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later.
Dimensions
Free length 215 mm, inner diameter 61 mm, rate 64 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.
Where This Rate Belongs
Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
What the Rear Spring Decides
Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load.
Applications
If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same.
What Fitting Involves
Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail.
Road Approval
Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.
Fitting and Setup Service
Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
