DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00580-09 is a shock absorber spring rated at 50 N/mm, 250 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 134 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Measured spring rate 50 N/mm
  • Öhlins part number 00580-09
  • Free length 250 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate

Why the Rate Holds

Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time.

Dimensions

Dimensionally this is a 57 mm × 250 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 50 N/mm.

Choosing 50 N/mm

From here it is easy to move one step in either direction once you have ridden it. A mid rate balances support under braking against compliance over the surface, which is why it is the usual starting point. Rates here suit a solo rider of typical weight on a road-going machine. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

Rate and the Linkage

On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong.

Applications

This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table.

Fitting

Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
