DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06310-08 is a shock absorber spring rated at 48 N/mm, 240 mm long with a 61 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 48 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 61 mm
  • 140 mm of usable stroke
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Öhlins part number 06310-08
  • Free length 240 mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service.

The Numbers That Matter

At 240 mm free length and 61 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Where This Rate Belongs

A middle rate balances support against compliance, which is why Öhlins uses it as the baseline. This is the middle of Öhlins' range — the rate most riders of average weight end up on once sag is set properly. This is where most riders of average weight land once static sag has been set to specification. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.

Applications

Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload.

Fitting

Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
