DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 06310-06 is a shock absorber spring rated at 44 N/mm, 240 mm long with a 61 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.
Key Features
- Powder-coated yellow
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- 140 mm of usable stroke
- Measured spring rate 44 N/mm
- Öhlins part number 06310-06
- Free length 240 mm
- Inner diameter 61 mm
How Öhlins Makes Them
The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships.
Dimensions
Öhlins holds the free length at 240 mm and the inner diameter at 61 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.
What This Rate Does
This is the middle of Öhlins' range — the rate most riders of average weight end up on once sag is set properly. From here it is easy to move one step in either direction once you have ridden it. This is where most riders of average weight land once static sag has been set to specification. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
Rate and the Linkage
Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most.
Applications
Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.
Fitting
Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag.
Road Approval
Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
