DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01096-06 is a shock absorber spring rated at 44 N/mm, 190 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Free length 190 mm
  • Öhlins part number 01096-06
  • Measured spring rate 44 N/mm
  • 109 mm of usable stroke

Manufacture and Tolerance

Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get.

Size and Rate

At 190 mm free length and 57 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Choosing 44 N/mm

This is where most riders of average weight land once static sag has been set to specification. A middle rate balances support against compliance, which is why Öhlins uses it as the baseline. If you are unsure and close to average weight in full kit, this is the sensible starting point. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise.

Applications

A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do.

Fitting

Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
