DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00180-32 is a shock absorber spring rated at 38 N/mm, 240 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Free length 240 mm
  • 114 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 00180-32
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Measured spring rate 38 N/mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated yellow

How Öhlins Makes Them

Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships.

Size and Rate

The 46 mm bore and 240 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 38 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

What This Rate Does

Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. The trade is fork dive under braking — noticeable, but rarely the limiting factor on the road. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most.

Applications

Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same.

What Fitting Involves

Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct. Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
