DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06390-07 is a shock absorber spring rated at 30-39 N/mm, 235 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • 120 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Öhlins part number 06390-07
  • Free length 235 mm
  • Measured spring rate 30-39 N/mm (progressive)
  • Progressively wound
  • Powder-coated yellow

How Öhlins Makes Them

Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made.

Dimensions

The 46 mm bore and 235 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 30-39 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Rate and the Linkage

Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged.

Applications

Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units.

Installation

The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops. Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
