DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 66520-026 is a shock absorber spring rated at 26 N/mm, 200 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • 120 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 66520-026
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Free length 200 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Measured spring rate 26 N/mm

Why the Rate Holds

The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips.

Dimensions

Dimensionally this is a 46 mm × 200 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 26 N/mm.

Where This Rate Belongs

Comfort and grip come from the spring moving early; this is the end of the range where that happens. On a machine ridden solo and mostly on the road, softer is often the honest choice. A softer rate keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface, which is worth more than outright support on most roads. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

How a Rear Spring Works

Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel.

Applications

Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short.

What Fitting Involves

Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
