DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 00280-22 is a shock absorber spring rated at 22 N/mm, 200 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.
Key Features
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Öhlins part number 00280-22
- Measured spring rate 22 N/mm
- 114 mm of usable stroke
- Inner diameter 46 mm
- Powder-coated yellow
- Free length 200 mm
Why the Rate Holds
The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips.
Size and Rate
Dimensionally this is a 46 mm × 200 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 22 N/mm.
Choosing 22 N/mm
This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. A softer rate keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface, which is worth more than outright support on most roads. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
How a Rear Spring Works
Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.
Applications
Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into.
Installation
The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do. Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
