DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06773-70 is a shock absorber spring rated at 20 N/mm, 420 mm long with a 70 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 70 mm
  • Free length 420 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Measured spring rate 20 N/mm
  • Öhlins part number 06773-70
  • 272 mm of usable stroke

How Öhlins Makes Them

Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch.

Dimensions

The 70 mm bore and 420 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 20 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Choosing 20 N/mm

A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged.

Applications

This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs.

Fitting

Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own. Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
