DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 05174-03 is a shock absorber spring rated at 20 N/mm, 370 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 05174-03
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Measured spring rate 20 N/mm
  • Free length 370 mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted.

Dimensions

Öhlins holds the free length at 370 mm and the inner diameter at 57 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Choosing 20 N/mm

Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. Comfort and grip come from the spring moving early; this is the end of the range where that happens. A softer rate keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface, which is worth more than outright support on most roads. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Rate and the Linkage

Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks.

Applications

A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs.

Installation

Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies. Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
