DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00281-72 is a shock absorber spring rated at 19 N/mm, 190 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 00281-72
  • 115 mm of usable stroke
  • Powder-coated black
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Measured spring rate 19 N/mm
  • Free length 190 mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made.

Dimensions

Öhlins holds the free length at 190 mm and the inner diameter at 46 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Choosing 19 N/mm

Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. On a machine ridden solo and mostly on the road, softer is often the honest choice. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

How a Rear Spring Works

Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate.

Applications

Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take.

Fitting

Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
