DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00698-69 is a shock absorber spring rated at 170 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • 88 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 00698-69
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Measured spring rate 170 N/mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Free length 230 mm

Why the Rate Holds

Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not.

The Numbers That Matter

At 230 mm free length and 57 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Where This Rate Belongs

Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it.

Applications

Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary.

Installation

Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
