DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 01093-54 is a shock absorber spring rated at 140 N/mm, 150 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.
Key Features
- Powder-coated yellow
- Measured spring rate 140 N/mm
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Öhlins part number 01093-54
- Free length 150 mm
- 67 mm of usable stroke
- Inner diameter 57 mm
Why the Rate Holds
The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips.
The Numbers That Matter
At 150 mm free length and 57 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.
Choosing 140 N/mm
Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
How a Rear Spring Works
Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it.
Applications
Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into.
Fitting
Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed. Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
