DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00698-49 is a shock absorber spring rated at 130 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Free length 230 mm
  • 95 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 130 N/mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Öhlins part number 00698-49

How Öhlins Makes Them

Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later.

Dimensions

Dimensionally this is a 57 mm × 230 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 130 N/mm.

Where This Rate Belongs

Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

How a Rear Spring Works

Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it.

Applications

This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?

Fitting

Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
