DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 01091-39 is a shock absorber spring rated at 110 N/mm, 160 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.
Key Features
- Powder-coated yellow
- 76 mm of usable stroke
- Öhlins part number 01091-39
- Free length 160 mm
- Measured spring rate 110 N/mm
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Inner diameter 57 mm
How Öhlins Makes Them
Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later.
Dimensions
Öhlins holds the free length at 160 mm and the inner diameter at 57 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.
What This Rate Does
Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
What the Rear Spring Decides
Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect.
Applications
This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.
Fitting
Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops.
Road Approval
Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.
Fitting and Setup Service
We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
