DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21066-34 is a shock absorber spring rated at 100 N/mm, 200 mm long with a 51 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 51 mm
  • Measured spring rate 100 N/mm
  • 93 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 21066-34
  • Free length 200 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow

How Öhlins Makes Them

Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch.

Size and Rate

Öhlins holds the free length at 200 mm and the inner diameter at 51 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Where This Rate Belongs

Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

Rate and the Linkage

Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does.

Applications

Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?

What Fitting Involves

Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
