The reason a standard paper element gets thrown away is not that it filters badly. Fine filtration is precisely what paper is for. What it cannot do is come back: it takes up water and does not give it up again, so every service is also a purchase, and the interval between services is fixed by what the owner is willing to spend rather than by what the air has done to the element. The Sprint Filter P14 in the PM186P14 is a different answer to the same question. It is a dry special non-woven fabric filtering at 14 microns, and it is built to be cleaned and refitted. The comparison worth making is therefore not fine against coarse, but disposable against washable.
Key Features
- Dry P14 fabric — special, non-woven, filtering at 14 microns
- Washed and put back rather than replaced — Sprint Filter designs it for the life of the motorcycle
- Airflow of 1,800 litres per square metre per second, where the P08 gives 5,050
- Nothing oiled, so there is no oiling to get wrong and nothing to migrate downstream
- A straight swap in the standard airbox: no modification, no remap, homologation as before
- Two years of warranty, running from the date of purchase
Fine filtration without the replacement cycle
Once cleaning is possible, the whole rhythm of the job changes. A dirty element is no longer a reason to postpone anything and no longer a reason to order anything: it comes out, gets compressed air from the clean side, and goes back in. Nothing has to be bought, applied or measured, which also removes the mistakes that come with oiled gauze, where too much oil leaves a film on exactly the surfaces a fuel-injected engine relies on for measurement.
What is given up in return, stated plainly
Airflow. The P14 passes 1,800 litres per square metre per second where the P08 passes 5,050, and that is the price of the finer weave, paid on every ride whether the conditions call for it or not. It is a trade, not a rank: the P08 is not a worse filter, it is the balance point for ordinary road and track use, and Sprint Filter also list the water-repellent P037 at 37 microns and the T12 at 7 microns for extreme off-road work. The second half of the price is that a finer medium collects its load sooner, so the inspection rhythm has to be shorter than it would be with a P08. On this element that is a small thing, because inspection ends with compressed air rather than with an invoice.
Care and cleaning
Clean side outwards with compressed air — that is the ordinary service for the PM186P14. Anything left after that comes out with lukewarm water and a mild detergent, rinsed until the water runs clear. Complete drying follows in open air, with no heat and no flame involved at any point, and the element goes back dry. There is no oiling stage to finish with.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Yamaha Jupiter MX, 2015 to 2026, and a direct replacement in the standard airbox. The same PM186P14 element is listed for six model names across that period; the full list is in the Fitment tab, and the maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
