DescriptionThe whole story▼
A universal Öhlins steering damper, specified by its 68 mm stroke rather than by a model name. What decides the fit is the bracket, not the motorcycle. The choice of size is easier when the exact model and year of the motorcycle are known.
Key Features
- Mounting length min/max 34,5/231,5 mm
- Öhlins part number SD 001
- Stroke 68 mm
- Universal fitment, chosen by dimensions
- Titanium-coloured body
Function
Mounting brackets are not included, because they depend on the frame and fork of the motorcycle. The damper should never take the place of correct chassis setup; it complements it. Oil in any damper ages with heat and time, so a service interval keeps the feel consistent. The damper should move freely through its full stroke with the handlebars turned lock to lock. The body finish is specified for exposure to weather and road dirt.
Choosing the Right Size
Clearance to cables, hoses and fairing parts should be checked through the full movement. Universal dampers are chosen by stroke and mounting length, never by model name alone. Because the unit is universal, there is no vehicle list — the dimensions are what count. A unit that is slightly longer than needed is safer than one that runs out of stroke. A damper with 68 mm of stroke that runs out of travel will limit steering lock — measure first.
Setup and Service
Faster steering movement meets more resistance, slow movement almost none. Racing machines use steering dampers almost without exception.
Road Approval
Road approval: not issued for a specific vehicle. Whether your installation needs to be inspected depends on how and where the damper is mounted; we can advise before you order.
Fitting and Setup Service
We recommend having the unit fitted by an authorised Öhlins service centre. We are one, and we offer fitting and setup — just ask.
