DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01092-21 is a shock absorber spring rated at 75 N/mm, 170 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • 88 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 01092-21
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 75 N/mm
  • Free length 170 mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly.

The Numbers That Matter

Free length 170 mm, inner diameter 57 mm, rate 75 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

Choosing 75 N/mm

Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

How a Rear Spring Works

A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged.

Applications

If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units.

Fitting

The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
