LS2 FF902 Scope II Duria White Blue Red – Modular Touring Helmet ECE 22.06 P/J

Duria is the sharper of the two graphics in the Scope II range: angular blocks that run forward along the shell and break across the chin bar, so the pattern still lines up when the bar is closed. In white, blue and red it is the most conventional and the most legible of the nine — the combination that reads as a motorcycle helmet from fifty metres.

Three shells for seven sizes

The range spans XS to 3XL on three shells (XS–S / M–L / XL–3XL), and there is a protection argument hidden in that. Impact energy is absorbed by the EPS liner crushing, and the liner has to be the right thickness for the head inside it. Stretch one shell across seven sizes and the small sizes end up with more foam than the standard requires while the large ones get the minimum. Three tools keeps every size closer to the thickness it was designed around.

About the Duria White Blue Red graphic

This is the version of Duria built around a white base, and the base is what makes it work. White carries the forward blocks around the brow and the chin bar, deep blue fills the flanks, and red does what red should do in a three-colour scheme — appear in small quantities, at the edges, where it draws the eye without taking over. Because the whole thing is under a gloss clear coat, the block edges stay hard; a matt lacquer would soften exactly the boundaries the design depends on. Two practical consequences follow from the large white area. It is the most visible helmet in the Duria family at dusk and in rain, which is a safety argument rather than a styling one. And it runs cooler in standing traffic than either of its darker siblings, because most of the shell is reflecting rather than absorbing.

HPTT: what the shell actually is

A word on what a thermoplastic shell does in a crash, because it is different from a composite. Fibre shells are stiff and spread the load quickly across a wide area, then delaminate. A thermoplastic flexes further before it fails, which spreads the impact over more time rather than more area. Both work — ECE 22.06 does not care how you get there, only that the head inside stays under the limits. HPTT gets there by deforming.

Ninety degrees, not one hundred and eighty

An honest note on riding with the bar raised, because modular helmets attract a lot of confident misinformation. The Scope II is homologated as a jet as well as a full-face, so the open configuration is approved — but approval is about protection, not aerodynamics. At town speeds it is comfortable. On a motorway it is loud and it pulls at your neck, and no amount of homologation changes that.

What ECE 22.06 and the P/J label actually mean

Straight-line impact was always the easier engineering problem. Rotation is what a real crash usually delivers — a glancing blow that twists the head — and it damages the brain at energies a shell survives comfortably. ECE 22.06 measures it for the first time, through an oblique drop onto an angled abrasive anvil, and sets a hard limit.

The second half of the label, P/J, is what allows this helmet to be ridden open legally. A modular approved only as P is certified with the bar down; raising it on the move leaves the certified configuration. The Scope II carries both, so the open position is an approved way to wear the helmet rather than a grey area.

Where it sits — and what SHARP actually tested

The Scope II is the entry point to modular helmets in this shop, and the table below is the honest map of what lies above it. Two observations. The jump from the Rapid III to this helmet is four hundred grams — the price of the mechanism. The jump from here to the Advant is a hundred and twenty euros for a shell change and a chin bar that folds further.

On SHARP: their FF902 Scope entry (three stars, May 2022) is the previous generation. It was tested to ECE 22.05, at 1.65 kg, in six sizes. Presenting that as a rating for this helmet would be wrong even though three stars is hardly a boast — the point is that it describes a different product.

COOLMAX, and where the air goes

Two intakes and one exhaust, and the exhaust is the half nobody thinks about. Air does not flow through a helmet because the front vents are open; it flows because the low-pressure area behind the shell pulls it out at the back. Block the rear port and the front intakes stop doing very much — which is why a helmet with a missing exhaust cover feels stuffier rather than airier.

Inside, the COOLMAX liner does its work by capillary action: channelled fibre draws sweat off the skin and spreads it over a larger area to evaporate. Laser-cut foam, hypoallergenic, removable, washable.

The visor, the sun visor and the Pinlock in the box

The outer screen comes off in about a minute with no tools, which matters more than it sounds. A visor is a consumable — it loses its argument with insects, wiper grit and petrol-station paper towel, and a scratched screen scatters oncoming headlights into a starburst that is a genuine safety problem rather than a cosmetic one. Six replacements are stocked for this helmet, from clear through to iridium gold.

Getting the helmet off a fallen rider

Every rider should know their helmet has an emergency release and where the tabs are, and almost none do. It takes ten seconds to find out: reach inside at the base of the shell, near the jaw, and feel for the two pull tabs. If they are tucked under the liner because someone refitted the padding tidily, pull them free now. A release system nobody can find is not a release system.

1750 grams, noise, and the rest of the honest list

The list of things that are not perfect, in order of how often they matter. Mass. 1750 g, and the chin-bar hardware is the reason. Noise. No measured figure exists; a flip-up has more edges to leak air than a full-face and this one is no exception. Pinlock grade. A 70 lens is included, which is better than nothing supplied, and slightly darker than an XLT.

Also worth saying plainly: SHARP's three-star FF902 entry is the previous generation under the previous standard. Untested is not the same as poorly rated, and we would rather say untested.

When something wears out

The chin curtain is the cheapest quiet you can buy for this helmet and the part most often missing from a used one — pulled out for cleaning and never put back, or removed in July and forgotten by October. It closes the gap under the chin bar, which is the largest opening in a closed helmet and the route most cold air and most noise take.
