DescriptionThe whole story▼
The DesertX carries a steel trellis frame, and steel trellis frames are painted. Paint on a frame spar that sits exactly where a boot, a pannier strap or a rock happens to land does not survive long. These covers put a replaceable carbon surface between the frame and everything that wants to scratch it.
Key Features
- Left and right covers for the exposed frame spars, supplied as a set
- Protects frame paint from boot abrasion, luggage straps and trail debris
- Autoclave carbon, bolted rather than glued, so a worn cover can simply be swapped
- Four surfaces: clear coat, matt, satin and raw
- Uses the original fixings — no adhesive pads, no drilling into the frame
Protecting Something You Cannot Repaint Easily
Frame paint is the one finish on a motorcycle that is genuinely awkward to restore. Touching it up properly means stripping the bike down to the spar, and nobody does that for a scratch. Rust that starts in a paint chip on a trellis tube is a slow, quiet problem that shows up years later as a bill.
That is the whole case for these panels: they are cheap relative to the thing they protect, and they are consumable. Fit them raw if the bike is used hard, and accept that they will look used — that is the point. Fit them in clear coat if the DesertX is mainly a road bike and the frame spars are part of the look.
Fitment and Compatibility
Ducati DesertX, 2022 to 2026, on the standard trellis frame using the original mounting hardware. Check for existing damage before fitting — a cover over a chip does not stop corrosion that has already started.
Road Approval
No ABE and no EC type-approval number is published for this set. The covers are bolt-on protective panels with no structural function; confirm the position for your own registration before road use.
Panniers and Straps
If the DesertX carries soft luggage, these covers change from a cosmetic item to a functional one. Soft panniers are held by straps that pass across the frame spars, and a loaded strap under vibration is an abrasive: it will polish through frame paint in a single long trip. A carbon panel between strap and tube takes that wear instead.
Hard cases are less demanding, because the load goes into a rack rather than across the frame — but the mounting brackets themselves sit close to the spars and can rub during flex. Either way, the covers are worth fitting before the first loaded trip rather than after it, since the damage they prevent cannot be undone afterwards.
