DescriptionThe whole story▼
For many young riders the Yamaha TT-R125LW, the big-wheel version of the TT-R125, is the first motorcycle with a manual clutch. Many of the mini bikes they started on have an automatic clutch, so the lever on the left is new territory: something to be squeezed, held and let out with feeling. Accossato's C7160 is a folding clutch lever for the TT-R125LW in the model years 2015 and 2016. It is machined in Italy from Ergal 7075, has a long blade for four fingers and a joint that lets that blade fold forward when the bike tips over.
Key Features
- Folding clutch lever for the Yamaha TT-R125LW, model years 2015 and 2016
- Replaces the standard lever at the original cable clutch perch
- Long blade with space for four fingers
- Joint lets the blade fold forward in a fall instead of breaking
- CNC-machined from Ergal 7075 in Italy
- Blade in black, blue, gold or green on a dark base
- No German ABE documented; for off-road use
Construction and Material Quality
Ergal 7075 is a high-strength aluminium alloy, and Accossato machines the C7160 from a solid block of it on CNC equipment in Italy. The idea behind that choice is a lever that is strong, reliable and light, qualities that count on a bike which will be dropped many times while its rider learns. It is made of two parts: a dark base that sits on the pivot of the clutch perch, and a blade in black, blue, gold or green, attached with a folding joint. The blade is Accossato's long clutch blade, with room for all four fingers.
The First Bike With a Clutch
Learning the clutch is mostly about finding and holding the friction point, the short stretch of lever travel where the clutch begins to take up drive. A good first lesson happens on flat grass: engine running, first gear, lever pulled in, then released very slowly with no throttle at all until the TT-R125LW creeps forward, then pulled in again to stop. Repeated a few dozen times, it teaches the hand where the bite comes. Next come gentle starts with a little throttle, then changes up into second and back down, with the lever pulled in for each change until the gear is in.
Stalls and slow topples are part of this stage, and nobody should be surprised by them. A beginner who lets the lever go too quickly will stall, lose balance and put the bike down, and if it lands on its left, the clutch lever takes the ground just when the young rider needs it most. The C7160's blade can fold forward on its joint in such a fall, so there is a fair chance the lesson continues after a quick check. Not every fall will leave it untouched, but a lever that keeps working keeps the learning going, and that is what the first months on a TT-R125LW are about.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the folding C7160 for the Yamaha TT-R125LW of 2015 and 2016 only, fitted at the original clutch perch. Accossato does not list a folding brake lever for this bike, so the C7160 is sold on its own. For riders who prefer a lever without a joint, Accossato also lists its rigid ESY688 clutch lever for the TT-R125LW, covering a longer span from 2005 to 2016.
Road Approval
No German ABE is documented for the C7160. The TT-R125LW is an off-road bike, and the lever is intended for the same kind of riding, away from public roads.
