Almost nothing on a used motorcycle records where it has been. The odometer gives distance, the service book gives dates, and neither says whether the machine spent its life on motorways or on farm tracks. The airbox does. Open it on an F 900 XR with a few years behind it and the panel inside is a physical record of the air the engine has been given — usually the first evidence a second owner has had on the subject. PM188P14 is the fine element for those who do not much like what they find.
Key Features
- Special non-woven material, dry in use, rated to 14 microns
- 1,800 l/m²/sec rated flow, where the standard woven panel for this box is rated at 5,050
- Load is held in the thickness of the mat rather than on a mesh surface
- No oil is involved at any point in its life, new or after cleaning
- About double the filtering surface of a typical performance element
- Direct fit in the series airbox, cleaned and refitted, two years of warranty
Reading the box on a used machine
A panel that has gone evenly grey has breathed ordinary road air. A coarse deposit gathered at the intake end says the machine has been somewhere unsurfaced, more than once. Pale dust lying across the whole face suggests dry unmade roads, or long spells behind other traffic in summer. None of it is precise, and none of it changes what the engine has already taken in, but it tells a new owner which sort of life this machine has had — and therefore whether the standard weave suits the riding now planned for it.
The finer medium, and its bill
Fourteen microns instead of eighty holds back a share of the load that a weave passes, including the fine mineral powder that stays airborne longest. The bill arrives as flow: a rated 1,800 l/m²/sec against 5,050 through the same panel area. One trade with two sides rather than a ladder with a best rung: the P14 is not the superior element but the one chosen for a particular kind of air. It will not make a standard F 900 XR quicker, since no filter inside an unmodified airbox does that, and what it offers instead is an intake restriction that stays low and repeatable across the years you own the machine.
Care and cleaning
Start with compressed air on the clean face and take time over it; the mat gives its load up slowly because it holds it through its depth. Never blow from the dirty side. Where a film resists, hand-warm water with a trace of mild detergent removes it, rinsed until the water runs clean. Drying is done in moving air alone, the slow part of the job and the part where elements are lost — heat guns, radiators and flames all destroy the medium. Refit it dry. The maintenance sheet for PM188P14 is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the BMW F 900 XR of 2019 to 2026, in the standard airbox with nothing to modify. The fine medium is listed for two machines, the F 900 XR and the F 900 R. Thirteen machines from three manufacturers share this housing with the standard weave, so a name on that longer list is not automatically on this one. The Fitment tab shows both entries with their model years.
