A racing medium carries assumptions about the rest of the motorcycle. It assumes the other restrictions have already been taken out, so the filter is the last thing in the way. It assumes a service regime that pulls the element after a session and cleans it the same evening. It assumes air somebody controls. On a machine in its first seasons, with no race class behind it and no build history in front of it, none of those assumptions is in place yet — worth knowing before ordering PM219S F1-85 rather than after.

Buying a specification before its conditions

There is nothing wrong with fitting this element ahead of the plan it belongs to, provided the plan exists. Sprint Filter builds the medium to obstruct as little as it can, which is genuinely useful to an engine held near the top of its range for long stretches, serviced between runs. What it is not is an upgrade in the ordinary sense. The 820 RR leaves the factory with a sealed intake path and a map to match; this panel changes neither, and it does not change the output. An element of this kind leaves a standard motorcycle exactly as strong as it was.

Two retention figures, read carefully

The 95.22 per cent looks like the last word until you notice what it was measured on. Both that figure and the 93.13 of the road weave are taken at 100 microns, the coarse end of what an air filter meets, and at that size a well-made weave of either aperture does well. Further down the scale the width of the openings starts to tell, and the fine mineral fraction hanging in the air behind traffic is where a wider weave has least to offer. The 15,000 l/m²/sec is real, but it is a ceiling per unit of fabric, not a delivery.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air on the clean inner face, worked outwards, so the load leaves along the route it arrived by. When the weave stays discoloured after that, lukewarm water with a mild detergent finishes it and the rinse runs until the water comes off clear. Drying is moving air at room temperature only — heat guns, radiators and flame damage the medium before the damage is visible — and it goes back dry, with nothing applied.
