A 1301 cc V-twin at that moment is asking its intake tract for everything it has, in two enormous events per revolution rather than the smooth continuous draw of a four-cylinder. Transient demand of that kind is where restriction is felt, and it is the reason the state of the airbox matters more on this motorcycle than on most.

Key Features

Dry polyester medium — never oiled, so there is nothing to wash out and nothing to re-apply

Woven polyester threads from 22 micrometres, not pressed paper fibre

Around twice the filtering surface of other performance air filters

Direct replacement in the standard airbox — no modification, no remap

Washable and reusable, designed by Sprint Filter to last the life of the motorcycle

Two-year warranty from the date of purchase

Two cylinders, two demands, no pause between them

A big V-twin does not sip. Each intake stroke is a large, abrupt event, and the air has to be there when the valve opens rather than shortly afterwards. Anything that slows the tract shows up first in exactly this transient region — not as a lower peak figure but as a fractional hesitation in how the engine picks up. A paper element that has been in the airbox for a season is measurably more restrictive than the one that came out of the box, and the change happens too gradually to notice on any single ride. The P08 PM155S is cleaned back to its baseline instead of drifting away from it.

Where Sprint Filter learned this

Sprint Filter was the official air filter supplier to KTM's Moto3 programme in 2014, 2015 and 2016 — three consecutive seasons of a class where engines are tightly regulated and the intake side is one of the few places left to be careful about. The P08 medium sold here is that same dry polyester: woven threads from 22 micrometres, roughly double the filtering surface, no oil anywhere in it. It should still be said honestly that fitting one will not make a standard Super Duke R quicker. It will stop it becoming slower.

Care and cleaning

Blow it through from the clean side with compressed air, working outwards. For a deeper clean, wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear, and let it dry fully in air — never with heat, never with a flame. Refit it dry; there is no oiling step and never has been.
