A filter does not age by the odometer. It ages by the volume of air that has passed through it, and those two numbers come apart badly on a bike like the CBR500R. The faired 500 in this family is the one that gets used for the long stage — motorway miles at a steady, sustained throttle opening, where the engine draws far more air per kilometre than the same twin does trickling through a town. Two CBR500Rs with identical mileage can therefore be at completely different points in the life of their elements. The Sprint Filter P14 CM220P14 responds to that by making the question cheap to answer: a dry non-woven element filtering to 14 microns, inspected and blown clean instead of estimated and replaced.
Key Features
- Dry, unoiled non-woven: there is nothing in the medium for the airstream to draw downstream onto a sensor or a throttle body
- Filtration of 14 microns, delivered at an air flow of 1,800 l/m²/sec
- Roughly double the filtering area you get from other performance elements
- Replaces the standard element in the standard airbox — nothing modified, nothing remapped, nothing to declare
- The whole service is compressed air from the clean side, after which the element goes back in rather than in the bin
- Built to last the life of the motorcycle; two years of warranty
Kilometres are a poor proxy
Service schedules count distance because distance is the only thing a workshop can read off the bike. It is a reasonable approximation for a chain and a hopeless one for an air filter, where a summer of long dry motorway runs and a summer of short damp commutes leave the same figure on the clock and entirely different elements in the airbox. The value of a washable filter here is not that it flows better; it is that inspecting it costs nothing, so the schedule can follow the actual condition rather than a printed interval.
Restriction that stays where it started
Sustained-throttle riding is also where a loaded element makes itself felt most consistently, because the engine is asking for a high proportion of what the intake can deliver, hour after hour, rather than in short bursts. A paper element climbs in restriction as it fills and never returns. The CM220P14 is returned to its starting condition every time it is cleaned, so the intake the engine gets in the last month before a service is the intake it had in the first. That stability, not a power figure, is what a bolt-in element honestly offers a standard motorcycle.
Care and cleaning
Never with heat, never with a flame, never with oil — those are the only prohibitions. Otherwise: compressed air from the clean side, worked outwards, and straight back into the airbox dry. For a deeper clean use lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear and let it dry through in open air first. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Honda CBR500R from 2019 to 2026. The same CM220P14 element covers six machines across the 400 and 500 twin range; the complete list is in the Fitment tab.
