Calling the P14 the fine end of this airbox is accurate and a little misleading. It is not the same cloth with smaller gaps in it. The woven element that shares this housing is polyester thread crossing polyester thread, a repeating aperture across a flat face. The P14 is a dry special nonwoven: fibres laid down without a pattern, in a mat with genuine thickness to it. Material is held through that depth rather than caught on a surface. The rating of 14 microns and the flow figure of 1,800 l/m²/sec are both consequences of the construction, and so is everything the element is good at.
Key Features
- Dry special nonwoven rated at 14 microns — the fine medium for this airbox
- Rated flow of 1,800 l/m²/sec, where the woven panel in the same box is rated 5,050
- Depth filtration through a fibre mat, not retention at a flat woven face
- Goes into the series Leoncino Trail 500 airbox with nothing cut and no remap
- Roughly twice the filtering area of an ordinary performance element
- Dry from manufacture, never oiled, washable, two years of warranty
Thickness, not a smaller hole
A woven filter works across two dimensions. Whatever is wider than the aperture stops, whatever is narrower passes, and the only way to hold back more is to close the weave further. A nonwoven mat works through three. A particle entering it meets fibre after fibre at unpredictable angles and over a real distance, so the ones retained are not merely the ones too large to get in at all. That is why this medium is described by a construction rather than by a thread pitch, and why its two figures sit so far from the woven panel's.
What the depth costs
Air has to travel the same thickness the dust does, and it pays for the journey. The rating of 1,800 l/m²/sec is around a third of the woven panel's, and that is not a detail to be argued away — it is the exchange written into the specification, and no filtration medium anywhere escapes it. Which leads to the half that gets overstated in this category generally: a slot-in element does not make a standard Leoncino Trail 500 noticeably stronger, and a fine one hands back intake headroom rather than finding any. It is bought for what stays out of the inlet tract, and for nothing else.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air held to the clean face and worked outwards is the routine service; the load leaves along the path it entered by instead of being driven deeper into the mat. An oily film rather than dry dust comes away under lukewarm water with a little mild detergent, rinsed until nothing more leaves the material. Drying is done in moving air at room temperature — no heat gun, no radiator, no flame — and the PM209P14 goes back in dry, with nothing applied to it. Sprint Filter's maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
