The twistgrip on a current Tuono V4 is not a valve, it is a request. Between the rider's hand and the throttle bodies sit a riding mode, a set of maps and a row of sensors whose entire job is to deliver the same response on a cold morning, in summer heat, or high on a mountain pass. One consequence of that is rarely said out loud: on this machine an intake that is slowly loading up does not present itself to the rider as a duller throttle. The electronics smooth it away long before it would be noticed. That is why the choice between media for PM01P14 has to be made on paper and on the calendar, never by impression.

Deciding what you cannot feel

Since the intake gives no feedback here, the useful questions are the ones that can be answered before the panel goes in. Where is the machine ridden between services — clean tarmac, or roads with an agricultural or industrial season? How far apart are the airbox visits in practice? Is there dust on the tank cover after a typical ride? A rider whose answers point at loaded air is buying retention with the closer medium; a rider on clean roads is spending flow for a benefit that will not arrive.

Sprint Filter's own scale runs from a 15,000 l/m²/sec racing cloth down to 560 for the extreme grade, and this one sits at 1,800; those numbers are properties of the material, not verdicts on it. None of them makes a standard motorcycle stronger. The return on a filter of this kind is a low intake resistance that comes back to the same figure after each cleaning, plus a part that is serviced instead of thrown away.

Care and cleaning

Blow PM01P14 through with compressed air from the clean face outward, which pushes the load back the way it arrived rather than deeper into the nonwoven. Water with a mild detergent is there for the residue air will not shift; rinse it thoroughly and let it dry completely in circulating air before it is refitted.
