DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 04745-10 is a pair of fork springs rated at 10 N/mm, 240 mm long with a 37.5 mm inner diameter. A fork that is sprung wrong uses up its travel before the damping has a chance to work.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Öhlins part number 04745-10
  • Inner diameter 37.5 mm
  • Supplied as a pair
  • Measured spring rate 10 N/mm
  • Free length 240 mm
  • 139 mm of usable stroke

Manufacture and Tolerance

Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost.

The Numbers That Matter

Dimensionally this is a 37.5 mm × 240 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 10 N/mm.

What This Rate Does

If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

Applications

Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary.

Fitting

The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops. Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
