DescriptionThe whole story▼

Motocross mechanics have an old habit that says a lot about how often bikes fall over: they tighten the lever clamps on the handlebar only as far as needed, so that the perch can turn on the bar in a crash instead of something breaking. On a Husqvarna FC 450 of 2016 to 2021, that habit can be combined with Accossato's C7284, a folding clutch lever machined from Ergal 7075. Between a clamp that can rotate and a blade that can fold, the left side of the bike has two ways to give way rather than snap.

Key Features

  • Folding clutch lever for the Husqvarna FC 450, 2016 to 2021
  • Replaces the stock lever at the original clutch mount
  • Long blade for a four-finger pull
  • Anti-break joint: blade can swing forward in a fall
  • Machined in Italy from solid Ergal 7075
  • Black, blue or orange blade, dark base
  • No German ABE documented; motocross and closed-course use

Construction and Material Quality

Accossato started out in 1969 in Moncalieri, near Turin, building competition motorcycles, and its off-road levers are made with racing in mind. The C7284 is CNC-machined in Italy from solid Ergal 7075, a high-strength aluminium alloy, to be strong, light and reliable. It is built from two parts: the dark base that mounts on the pivot at the clutch, and a blade in black, blue or orange, joined to the base by the hinge that lets it fold. The blade has the longer clutch shape, with space for four fingers.

Two Ways to Give

The clamp trick is simple. Instead of tightening the perch clamp as hard as possible, the mechanic sets it firm enough that the lever stays put in normal riding but will rotate on the bar under a heavy blow. When the FC 450 is dropped on its left, the whole assembly can twist downward rather than resist, and the load on the lever falls. The rider turns it back and carries on. Good mechanics check the setting after every wash, because a clamp that is too loose lets the lever creep during riding, and that is no better.

The folding blade adds a second line of defence. Where the clamp lets the perch turn, the C7284's joint lets the blade itself swing forward, so an impact that arrives at the tip of the lever has somewhere to go. Neither measure is a guarantee, and a big crash on to rocks or a landing on the bars can still damage the lever. Used together, though, they can keep a 450 motocrosser running after the sort of tip-over that would otherwise end a practice session with a broken clutch lever and a long walk back to the van.

Fitment and Compatibility

Accossato's list gives the C7284 for the Husqvarna FC 450 from 2016 to 2021. It replaces the standard lever at the original clutch mount. The FC 450 of 2014 and 2015 and the 2022 bike are listed with the C7283, the clutch lever that is also offered in red. On the brake side, the B8283 is listed for all years from 2014 to 2022 and comes, like this lever, in black, blue or orange.

Road Approval

No German ABE is on record for the C7284. It belongs on motocross tracks and closed off-road land.
