The P14 is the odd one out among the media that fit this airbox: it is not a weave. Where the standard and racing elements are woven cloths with a regular aperture, this one is a special non-woven — a mat of fibres laid in every direction, with no repeating opening to measure. Its 14 µm rating therefore describes what the material achieves rather than the width of a hole, which is why it cannot simply be lined up beside a mesh figure and read off as a ranking. On a Bonneville Speedmaster, a cruiser that covers distance two-up and loaded, that structural difference matters more than the headline number does.
Key Features
- Special non-woven structure, dry, rated at 14 µm for demanding and dusty air
- Flow rated at 1,800 l/m²/sec, the figure that pays for the finer structure
- No oil in the specification and none after washing — nothing to migrate downstream
- About double the filtering surface of other performance filters, inside the unaltered airbox
- Direct replacement for the series paper panel: no modification, no remap, no paperwork
- Washable and reusable for the life of the machine, with a two-year warranty from purchase
Why a mat is rated differently from a weave
In a woven cloth the openings repeat, so a single dimension describes the whole surface honestly. A non-woven has no such geometry: fibres cross at random and a particle's path through the material is long and indirect. Its rating is a filtration result, not a measurement of a gap. That is worth knowing before comparing 14 µm with the 80 µm of the standard weave and concluding that one is five times the other — they are not the same kind of number, even though the direction of the trade holds in both: finer holds more back and lets less through.
Loading through the thickness
The practical consequence is capacity. A mat catches through its depth as well as at its face, so it accepts a great deal before its resistance begins to climb — useful on a machine that covers long distances between services. None of that makes a series Speedmaster noticeably faster; a drop-in element never does. It keeps the intake at a predictable resistance and ends the habit of buying a panel.
Care and cleaning
Service the SM225P14 with compressed air played over the clean side and directed outwards through the media. When a long dusty trip has loaded it, wash it in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear and let it dry fully in open air. Never use heat or a flame, and refit it dry. The maintenance sheet sits in the Downloads tab.
