Speed is what clears the air around a motorcycle, and a cruiser gives up most of it. A Kawasaki Eliminator ridden the way cruisers are ridden — unhurried, in town, in the middle of traffic rather than past it — sits in the dust cloud of the vehicles ahead for far longer per kilometre than a bike doing the same route quickly. The load on the element is not dramatic, it is simply constant and unusually fine, because at those speeds the coarse material has already fallen out of the air and what remains is the part that stays suspended. The Sprint Filter P14 PM164P14 is built for that fraction: dry non-woven, filtering to 14 microns rather than the 80 of the standard P08.
Key Features
- Dry non-woven medium, never oiled — nothing to migrate onto sensors or throttle bodies
- Filtration at 14 microns; air flow 1,800 l/m²/sec
- Filtering surface at roughly double that of other performance filters
- Washable and reusable — the service is compressed air from the clean side
- Fits the standard airbox as a direct replacement — no modification, no remap
- Two years of warranty, on a part designed to last as long as the bike
Low speed is its own operating condition
Slow riding changes more than the dust. Less air passes over the engine, less passes through the intake, and the whole machine runs warmer and works in the lower half of its rev range. None of that is a problem for a bike designed for it, but it does mean an element on an Eliminator loads differently from the same element on a Ninja covering the same distance. The condition of the filter has to be judged by looking at it rather than by comparing odometers with somebody else.
The part that stops being a purchase
Because the medium is washable, the element leaves the list of things that get bought. It is blown through with compressed air at a service, washed when a hard summer has earned it, and put back the same day. Over the years an owner keeps a cruiser — which tends to be a long time, since these are rarely bought as a stepping stone — that turns a recurring line on the service bill into a single one at the start. None of which makes the bike quicker, and it would be dishonest to suggest otherwise: an element can only give back the restriction it was adding, and on a standard intake that is a small quantity. The benefit is that the quantity stays small for as long as the bike is owned.
Care and cleaning
A bike used slowly in traffic takes on a fine, steady load, so the element earns a blow-through more often than the distance covered would suggest: compressed air from the clean side, working outwards, then refitted dry. A summer of that justifies a wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinsed until the water runs clear, then a patient and complete air dry, with heat and flame ruled out. Nothing is ever oiled. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
