The 155 engine in the MT 15 is built to work in two different ways. Variable valve actuation gives it one valve profile for the low and middle range and a second for the top. Those two states do not make the same demand on the intake: what the engine can live with at part throttle becomes the limiting factor once it is being asked to fill quickly at the top. The Sprint Filter P08 PM198S is a dry element chosen for that upper condition and cleaned rather than replaced, so the intake stays in much the same state across a service interval instead of only at the beginning of one.
Key Features
- Dry P08 polyester and no oil anywhere in it, which is why the intake sensors stay clean
- Filtration at 80 microns, airflow at 5,050 litres per square metre per second
- Its filtering area is around double that of other performance filters
- The airbox stays standard, the mapping stays standard, the homologation stays as it is — the element takes the original's place
- Washable and reusable; compressed air handles the normal service
- Two years' warranty, effective from the purchase date
Two breathing regimes, one element
Restriction that is invisible where the engine is barely working is exactly what is felt at the other end, where the cylinder is trying to fill in the time available. This is not an argument that a filter adds output — it does not. It is an argument about where a loading element shows up first: at the top, where the second profile is supposed to do its work. Keeping the element clean is the cheapest way to keep that part of the engine's character intact.
Dry polyester, and the price of a finer weave
The P08 is a single woven layer spun from polyester threads of 22 microns and upwards, used dry from the first kilometre to the last. Oiled cotton works differently: it makes the air sticky, and that oil lives upstream of everything the engine measures. Sprint Filter's comparison has a four-layer oiled cotton filter holding 76.42 per cent of 100-micron test particles against 93.13 per cent for the dry P08. If the roads are genuinely severe, finer media exist — the P14 at 14 microns, the T12 at 7 — and each step finer costs flow, from 5,050 litres per square metre per second for the P08 down to 560 for the T12. That is a trade, not a ranking; for a road machine that also revs, the P08 is the end of it that keeps the top of the range.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air does the work, blown from the clean side outwards; that is the service in normal use. Lukewarm water with a mild detergent is the step up, rinsed until the water runs clear. Whatever the method, the element goes back in dry — dried in open air, all the way through, and never with heat or a flame. Oil has no part in any of it. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Yamaha MT 15 and MT 155, 2018 to 2026, and a direct replacement in the standard airbox. The same PM198S element serves seven machines built around this airbox, across the 125 and 155 versions of the engine; the full list is in the Fitment tab.
