DescriptionThe whole story▼
Touring plans rarely survive the whole route. A closed pass sends you over a forestry track, the campsite waits at the end of a gravel lane, and road works in the valley have stripped the surface down to loose stone. The Caponord 1200 is built first of all for roads, yet on days like these it needs a left hand that can hold the clutch in its friction zone at walking pace. The Accossato ESC080 is a CNC-machined aluminium clutch lever for the Caponord 1200 of 2014 to 2017, with adjustable reach and a choice of three blade lengths.
Key Features
- Clutch lever for the Aprilia Caponord 1200, model years 2014 to 2017
- Fits the original clutch mounting in place of the standard lever
- Reach to the grip set by an adjuster close to the pivot
- Blade lengths: short, standard (approximately 138 mm) and long
- Seven colours for the blade on a hub that is always black
- Machined from solid aluminium and anodised
- Rigid construction with no folding hinge
- Track use only: no German ABE on record
Construction and Material Quality
Anodising gives the ESC080 its colour. The process grows a hard oxide layer out of the aluminium itself and dyes it, so the colour belongs to the surface instead of sitting on top as a coat. Grit thrown up on a gravel detour can still leave scratches on a Caponord 1200's controls, but there is no paint film to lift at the edges. Before that step the lever is CNC-machined from a solid blank. Its hub stays black on every version, the blade takes the colour, and the blade runs from hub to tip as one rigid piece.
When the Tarmac Runs Out
On loose ground, the clutch is the finest speed control a motorcycle offers. Throttle held steady just above idle, rear brake dragging lightly, clutch slipped in and out of its friction zone: that combination lets a heavy, loaded bike move at a walker's pace without stalling and without the rear wheel digging in. Seated on a Caponord 1200 over gravel, you keep your weight central and your arms loose, which means the left hand has to do its work without tugging on the bar.
That is where reach matters more than on tarmac. With the lever set a little closer to the grip, two fingers can hold the friction point while the others keep hold of the bar, and the steering stays calm when a rut pulls at the front wheel. The short blade, made in blue, gold, green, orange and silver, suits that split grip; the long version adds leverage for riders who prefer the whole hand on the lever. Loose ground is familiar territory for Accossato, which won an enduro world title in 1985.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the ESC080 for the ETV 1200 Caponord from 2014 to 2017. It fits at the Caponord 1200's original clutch mounting, replacing the stock lever, and the same part number is named for the Dorsoduro 1200, whose twin-cylinder engine the Caponord shares. On the right-hand side, the EDB080 brake lever covers the same model years, and choosing both in one colour gives the cockpit a matched pair.
Road Approval
There is no documented German ABE for this clutch lever, which is why we sell it for use on closed circuits.
