On a Monster the rider sits upright with the feet further forward and wider apart than on a sports bike. That puts a trouser leg and a boot within reach of the upper chain run, which is why this bike leaves the factory with a guard over it.

Not a Styling Part
Chain covering is written into the construction rules in much of Europe, and the rule is about the upper run where clothing can reach it. Removing the guard altogether is not an option on a road-registered bike, whatever a photograph online suggests.
What the guard does beyond that is keep chain lube off the underside of the tail. Anyone who has cleaned up after waxing a chain knows the difference, and on an unfaired bike every one of those specks is visible.
Fitment and Compatibility
Ducati Monster 1200, model years 2014 to 2016, on the original mounts. Fullsix lists a different chain guard for 2017 onwards; tell us the model year and we will confirm which number applies.
Road Approval
Fullsix publishes neither an ABE nor an EC type-approval number for this part. Chain covering is mandatory in several markets — confirm the position for your own registration before road use.
Carbon Where Plastic Was
The original guard is injection-moulded plastic and it does the job perfectly well. What it does not do is stay looking new: five seasons of chain fling and cleaning leave it chalky.
Cured laminate under clear coat does not go chalky, because there is no pigment in it to fade. On a bike where the whole point is that you can see the mechanical parts, that is the honest argument for the swap.
