The reasonable objection to a fine filter is that it must block sooner. Smaller gaps, the same dust, a shorter run before the airbox needs opening again. It is a fair thought, and it is half a picture, because how long a medium lasts depends less on how fine it is than on where it can put what it has caught. The SM277P14 has somewhere to put it.

Where the dust actually goes

On a surface filter the load builds as a layer across the upstream face, and every particle sitting there stands in front of the openings its neighbours need. A nonwoven mat collects through its thickness instead: particles come to rest at different depths, spread through the material rather than stacked on it. Add roughly double the area of a standard performance element and the same quantity of dust is distributed thinner again. Fine and short-lived are not the same property, and a medium built this way is what separates them.

What that does and does not license

It does not license leaving the airbox shut indefinitely, and it certainly does not make a standard ZT 310-T any stronger — a drop-in element cannot do that, and this one has traded flow reserve away in the bargain. What it does is make the interval a question about the air the bike breathes rather than an automatic penalty for choosing the finer specification. Ride dusty lanes all summer and it will ask to be cleaned; ride clean roads and it will not ask any sooner than the coarser element would.

Care and cleaning

Blow the element through from its clean side with compressed air, so the load is pushed back out of the depth it entered. If the contamination is greasy, lukewarm water and a mild detergent will shift it, and a thorough rinse finishes the job. Dry it in ambient moving air with no heat gun, radiator or flame anywhere near it, and refit the SM277P14 dry with nothing on it. Sprint Filter's maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
