Wind protection is a comfort feature with a side effect nobody sells it on: it removes information. Behind the RS's half fairing and screen you stop collecting the small evidence of what you have ridden through — dust in the eyes on a dry back road, chaff at harvest, the film left on a visor by a wet motorway hour. The engine is still drawing all of it. The rider has simply lost the habit of noticing, and the intake is the one part of this motorcycle that reports nothing on its own behalf. The Sprint Filter PM142S answers that by being a filter you can look at, whenever you want, at no cost.
Key Features
- Woven polyester, one layer, run dry — there is no oil to reapply and none to migrate downstream
- 80 µm filtration with a rated flow of 5,050 l/m²/sec, the medium for road and track use
- Thread diameter from ø 22 microns, quoted separately from the aperture of the weave
- Approximately twice the filtering surface of other performance filters within the standard frame
- Direct replacement for the paper panel — airbox unmodified, factory mapping untouched
- Cleaned rather than replaced, specified for the motorcycle's lifetime, two-year guarantee
An inspection that can be repeated
Looking at a paper element is only useful if you are ready to act on what you see, and acting means having bought a spare in advance. That is why most riders skip the look and follow the schedule. A washable panel takes the awkward step out: hold it up against the light, decide, and if it needs it, clean it there and then. The check costs some attention and no parts at all, which is what turns it into a habit rather than a service item. None of this adds performance — no insert filter makes a series machine noticeably quicker — but it does replace guesswork with a look.
What the schedule cannot know
A maintenance interval is written in kilometres because kilometres are what a motorcycle counts. A filter, though, ages by the volume of air pulled through it and by what that air was carrying, which is a matter of route, season and traffic rather than distance. Two RS models showing the same reading on the clock can be nowhere near each other. That gap is precisely the space a fairing hides, and it is why an element you can examine and restore is worth more on a faired sports tourer than on a naked bike whose rider gets the news first-hand.
Care and cleaning
Normal cleaning is dry: an air line on the clean side, worked outward, so the dust leaves by the way it entered. Where more has collected than air will lift, tepid water and a mild washing-up detergent will do it — rinse until the water runs clear, then dry the element completely in open air. Heat is the one thing that destroys polyester, so no heat gun, no radiator and no flame. It goes back in dry and untreated. The maintenance sheet is filed in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the BMW R 1200 RS built from 2015 to 2019, as a direct replacement in the standard airbox. The same element serves nine machines in the boxer range; model years for each are listed in the Fitment tab.
