The F 850 GS earned its reputation by being used rather than admired — commuted on, loaded up, ridden through weather that keeps other bikes indoors. Bikes that get used accumulate service history, and the air filter is the item most often left until the next big job because nothing about a loaded element announces itself. The Sprint Filter P08 PM188S changes the economics of that: it is a dry polyester element with roughly double the filtering surface, designed to be cleaned and refitted for the life of the motorcycle instead of thrown away every service.

The service you can stop buying

Run the arithmetic over the life of an F 850 GS and the picture is clear. A paper element is replaced at a service interval, every time, for as long as you own the bike — and on a machine ridden year-round through grit and rain that interval comes around often. This element is cleaned instead. Compressed air at most services, water when it has had a hard season, and it goes back in. Sprint Filter designs the P08 to last the life of the motorcycle, which on a bike bought to be kept is the more relevant timescale than the price of a single part.

What changes on the road

Nothing dramatic, and it is worth being honest about that. This is not a power part and it will not rewrite your dyno chart. What it does is hold the intake at a low, stable pressure drop instead of letting it climb through the service interval — so the fuelling stays where BMW set it, the throttle keeps the response it had when the bike was new, and the engine does not spend the back half of every interval working slightly harder for the same air. The riders who notice it most are the ones who fit it to a bike that has covered a few thousand kilometres since its last filter change.

Care and cleaning

Blow it through from the clean side with compressed air, working outwards. When that is no longer enough, wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear, and dry fully in air — never with heat or a flame.
