Manufacture and Tolerance
Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch.
Size and Rate
The 61 mm bore and 240 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 90 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.
What This Rate Does
Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
Rate and the Linkage
Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does.
Applications
Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units.
Fitting
The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops.
Road Approval
Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.
