How Öhlins Makes Them
The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get.

What This Rate Does
Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
What the Rear Spring Decides
The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong.
Applications
This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload.
Installation
Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.
