The Configuration Side
Every rider aid on an R is reached from the left block, and on a homologation special there are more of them and they get changed more often than on any road bike.
Adjusted All Weekend
Traction, engine braking and map move with tyre condition, fuel load and track temperature. That is a great many operations across two days of running.
Printing Goes First
Surface-applied legends on a moulded shell disappear under ultraviolet and cleaning products. On a race bike that happens within two seasons rather than five.
Warm, Then Cold, in a Paddock
An R heats hard and cools completely between sessions. Plastics creep under that cycling; a machined body is unaffected by it entirely.
Two Finishes
Black or titanium, grown into the aluminium. On an R carrying titanium fasteners and carbon throughout, the titanium option disappears into the specification.
Reversible for a Collector
Nothing spliced. On a homologation special that will eventually be sold to somebody who cares about originality, an untouched loom is worth real money.
Nine Hundred and Ninety-Eight Cubic Centimetres
Under the World Superbike limit, reached by shortening the stroke. Everything unusual about the R follows from making that engine survive the revs it can then reach.
Titanium Connecting Rods
A consequence of the rev ceiling rather than a specification flourish. Nothing conventional lasts a season up there and Ducati has never pretended otherwise.
Aerodynamics From Racing
The R's bodywork produces measurable load well below top speed. Keeping the front wheel loaded under acceleration is the problem being solved.
Numbers That Mean Something
An R's specification reads like a list of extravagances until you notice that every item traces back to a rule or to a rev ceiling. Ducati does not fit titanium because it sounds expensive; it fits titanium because steel does not last a season at those speeds.
